작가노트

대한민국 최남단에 가까운 제주 서귀포시에 차려진 어느 전시장에 가면 대문 옆에 공부방임을 알리는 현수막이 걸려있다.

 

그렇지만, 거기에는 알지 못할 문자들이 큼지막하게 나열되어 있을 뿐, 그것은 당장은 읽어낼 수 있는 익히 보거나 알고 있던

문자가 아니기에 갸우뚱 하게 된다. 글자는 읽어낼 수가 없을 때 문자의 역할을 하지 못하며 이미지에 지나지 않는다.

 

그리고, 대문을 지나 공부방에 들어서게 되면 문자의 생성 원리를 풀이한 작품들을 하나씩 마주하게 되는데, 짧은 시간의 학습을 통해서 여태껏 경험하지 못한 새로운 문자를 금방 읽어 낼 수 있는 묘한 경험을 하게 될지도 모른다. 어쩌면, 도통 알 수 없는 수수께끼의 정답을 알게 되었을 때 느끼게 되는 공허함이 밀려올지도 모를 일이다.

 

어쨋든, 텍스트와 영상이 나열된 공부방을 머물다 나오게 되면 대문 앞에 걸린 현수막에는 좀 전까지는 이미지로 보였을 뿐인 어떤 글자가 읽을 수 문자로 변해 있을 것이다.

 

외진 곳임에도 기어이 찾아온 관람객들에게 공부를 한자하고 돌아가는 듯한 뿌듯함을 안기는 훌륭한 공부방이 되기를 기원하며 프로젝트를 준비한다.

Artist's Note

 

 If you go to an exhibition hall in Seogwipo, Jeju, near the southernmost tip of Korea, there is a banner next to the gate announcing the study room.

 

However, there is only a large list of unknown letters, and it is not a well-known or known letter that can be read right now, so I am tilted. Letters do not serve as letters when they cannot be read, and they are nothing more than images.

 

In addition, when you pass through the gate and enter the study room, you will face works that solve the principle of generating letters one by one, and you may have a strange experience of quickly reading new letters that you have not experienced before through learning in a short time. Perhaps, you will feel the emptiness you feel when you know the correct answer to a completely unknown mystery.

 

In any case, if you stay in a study room where texts and videos are listed, a certain letter, which was only seen as an image a while ago, will turn into a readable letter on the banner hung in front of the gate.

 

Even though it is a remote place, we prepare for the project in hopes that it will be a great study room that gives visitors a sense of pride as if they are studying and returning.
